DOWSIL PR1200
Harmonization Code : 3208.20.90 | Paints and varnishes that are dispersed or dissolved in a non aqueous medium

Main features
- Adhesion-Promoting Surface Treatment
- Wipe, Spray, or Dip Application
- 1 to 2-Hour Cure Window
Product Description
DOWSIL™ PR-1200 RTV Prime Coat is a one-part, naphtha-based liquid adhesion primer for improving the bond of moisture-cure RTV and heat-cure silicone elastomers to difficult substrates. Supplied in clear and red variants, it can be used on many metals, aluminum, glass, ceramics, masonry, granite, FR-4, and selected plastics. The primer is applied as a very light, even film by wiping, dipping, or spraying, then moisture-cured at room temperature before silicone application. The thin reactive layer supports silicone adhesion without becoming a bulk coating. Variant-specific typical data include 4.9% nonvolatile content for clear and 4.5% for red, with an 18-month shelf life from manufacture.
Key features
- Broad substrate range: Supports priming on many metals, aluminum, glass, ceramics, masonry, granite, FR-4, and selected plastics.
- Thin-film application: Apply a very light, even coat by wiping, dipping, or spraying; remove excess material to avoid over-application.
- Controlled room-temperature cure: Generally cures for 1–2 hours at room temperature and 20–90% relative humidity before silicone application.
- Clear and red variants: Two color options are available with variant-specific nonvolatile-content data.
- Documented aluminum peel result: Both variants report a typical 180-degree peel strength of 37 ppi on aluminum.
Applications / Suitable for
- RTV and heat-cure silicone adhesion to metals, aluminum, glass, and ceramics
- Silicone priming on masonry, granite, and plywood
- Silicone adhesion to FR-4 and selected structural plastics
- Surface preparation for silicone sealants, coatings, and elastomers

Additional Information
DOWSIL™ PR-1200 RTV Prime Coat
DOWSIL™ PR-1200 RTV Prime Coat is a one-part, naphtha-based surface treatment used to enhance adhesion of moisture-cure RTV and heat-cure silicones to metals, glass, ceramics, masonry, FR-4, and selected plastics. Clear and red variants use the same thin-coat application and room-temperature moisture-cure process.

Surface Preparation and Primer Application
PR-1200 should form a very thin, uniform treatment on a clean, dry substrate. Control surface preparation, application quantity, ambient cure conditions, and the interval before applying the silicone.
Store below 32°C (90°F), keep containers tightly closed, minimize headspace, and protect the primer from moisture. Pour only a small working quantity into a clean, dry container and discard unused working material. Do not use material that becomes milky or develops a large amount of white precipitate. Use the labeled Use Before date.
Application Controls
Clear and Red Variant Comparison
The two PR-1200 variants share the same primer function and application approach. Use the variant-specific typical data below when selecting and documenting the commercial form.
| Variant | Nonvolatile content | 180-degree peel strength on aluminum | Selection note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear | 4.9% | 37 ppi | Clear commercial variant; 18-month shelf life from manufacture. |
| Red | 4.5% | 37 ppi | Red commercial variant; 18-month shelf life from manufacture. |
Values are typical and not specification limits. Current product literature recommends storage below 32°C (90°F); follow the labeled Use Before date and regional product documentation.
Supported Application Contexts
PR-1200 is used as a thin surface treatment before applying RTV or heat-cure silicone materials. The substrate and silicone system should be evaluated together under the intended preparation, cure, and service conditions.
