Product Description

DOWSIL™ 94-003 Dispersion Coating is a one-part, solvent-borne fluorosilicone elastomer coating supplied as 50% solids in methyl ethyl ketone. It cures at room temperature through atmospheric moisture to form a flexible rubber coating. The material is designed to protect substrates and parts, including silicone rubber insulation and ducting, from solvents, fuels and oils, and it has also been used for corrosion control in integral fuel tanks. The cured coating is described as flexible from -65°C to +260°C and resistant to weathering, moisture and ozone. It can be brushed or dipped as supplied, or thinned with methyl ethyl ketone for spray application. Primer-based surface preparation is documented for stronger and more uniform adhesion on metal and plastic surfaces.

Key features

  • Fuel and oil exposure resistance: Retains properties and good bond strength when exposed to oils and fuels.
  • Flexible moisture-cured elastomer: Cures at room temperature to a flexible rubber and is described as flexible from -65°C to +260°C.
  • Flexible application options: Can be brushed or dipped as supplied, or thinned with methyl ethyl ketone for spray application.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Protective coating for silicone rubber insulation exposed to solvents, fuels and oils
  • Protective coating for ducting and other parts exposed to solvents, fuels and oils
  • Corrosion-control coating for integral fuel tanks

Processing and application

Surface preparation, moisture control during mixing and the selected application method influence coating consistency and adhesion. Use the documented substrate, primer, thinning and drying conditions as the starting point for process evaluation.

Surface preparation: Metals and plastics use a documented cleaning, solvent-rinse and DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer process; allow the primer to dry for at least 1 hour, depending on relative humidity.
Application method: Brush or dip as supplied. For spray application, thin with methyl ethyl ketone to the viscosity required by the intended spray equipment.
Coating build: Average build is 0.05 mm per dip. Apply additional coats after allowing the coated surface to air-dry for 30 minutes.
Cure: Typical cure time is 24 hours at 25°C through exposure to moisture in the air.

Application stages

Stage 1
Prepare the substrate
Clean metal and plastic surfaces using the documented chlorinated-solvent process and a slightly abrasive pad or coarse lint-free cloth, then rinse with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. Apply a thin coat of DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer by dipping, brushing or spraying and allow at least 1 hour to dry. Silicone rubber normally requires slight abrasion and an acetone rinse rather than primer; thin sections may require primer.
Stage 2
Mix, pigment or thin
Any added solvent, pigment or filler must be free of moisture to avoid premature gelation. Mix in a closed container by rolling until uniform or use a commercial paint shaker. For pigmentation, the source reports good coverage with pigment at a minimum of 10% by weight of the total combination; documented examples include zinc oxide, titanium oxide and carbon black.
Stage 3
Apply, build and cure
Brush or dip the coating as supplied, or spray after thinning with methyl ethyl ketone for the intended equipment. A dip produces an average build of 0.05 mm. For additional thickness, allow 30 minutes of air drying before the next coat. Allow approximately 24 hours at 25°C for moisture cure.
Storage and Handling

Store at or below 32°C in the original unopened container. Under these conditions, the usable life is 8 months from the date of production. Available package sizes are pint, gallon and 5-gallon containers with respective net weights of 0.45, 3.6 and 18.1 kg. Review the current safety data sheet and container label before handling. The product is not tested or represented as suitable for medical or pharmaceutical uses.

Applications

The coating is documented for protecting parts from solvents, fuels and oils and for corrosion control in integral fuel tanks. Application-specific evaluation should preserve the intended substrate preparation, coating build and cure conditions.

Silicone rubber insulation prepared for protective fluorosilicone coating
Silicone rubber insulation
The coating was developed to protect silicone rubber insulation from solvents, fuels and oils. Silicone rubber surfaces are normally lightly roughened and rinsed with acetone rather than primed, although thin sections may require primer.
Industrial ducting coated for exposure to fuels oils and solvents
Ducting and exposed parts
Ducting and other parts exposed to solvents, fuels or oils can be evaluated for brush, dip or spray coating. The moisture-cured fluorosilicone forms a flexible rubber layer, and additional coats can be used where greater build is required.
Integral fuel tank surface prepared for corrosion-control coating
Integral fuel tanks
The product has been used to control corrosion in integral fuel tanks. Adhesion was reported as excellent on DOWSIL™ 1200 OS-primed 2024 clad aluminum after cure and after 7 days at 80°C in Jet Reference Fuel under the stated test conditions.
