Product Description
CONAP AD-1146 Adhesive Primer is a solvent-borne, heat-cured primer used to prepare supported substrates for bonding with liquid polyurethanes during cure. The primer can be applied by spray, roller coating, doctor blade, or brushing. Typical viscosity is 1,500-2,750 cP at 25 deg C, solids content is 23.0-25.0%, and thermal activation is used before polyurethane application. Documented applications include metal priming, glass and glass-fiber laminates, and wood and leather. Surface cleanliness, solvent removal, primer thickness, and thermal activation are central to the documented AD-1146 process.

Processing
Apply, dry, activate, then introduce the polyurethane
Surface cleanliness, solvent removal, primer thickness, and thermal activation are central to the documented AD-1146 process.
- Prepare surfaces so they are free of moisture, dirt, rust, chemicals, and mold release. Sandblasting, etching, or degreasing may be used as appropriate.
- Apply one or two coats of AD-1146 by soft brush, spray, roller coating, or doctor blade. Allow 30 minutes air dry between coats and at least 1 hour after the final coat.
- For spray application, one part AD-1146 may be diluted with up to two parts CONAP S-1 Solvent.
- Before applying polyurethane, activate the primer by baking at 82-93 deg C (180-200 F) for 1-2 hours.
- For optimum results, use a dry-film thickness of 0.5-1.5 mil; film thickness should not be below 0.5 mil.
Storage and handling
Store cool, dry, sealed, and out of direct sunlight
Store below 25 deg C (77 F) in a dry, controlled environment out of direct sunlight. Keep containers tightly sealed to minimize evaporation.
A 12-month suitability period from date of shipment applies when stored under the recommended conditions in original sealed containers. Mix the product thoroughly before use.
Technical guidance
Control cleanliness, residual solvent, and dry-film thickness
Bond quality depends on preparation of the actual substrate and complete solvent removal from the primer film.
Clean the substrate
Remove moisture, dirt, rust, chemicals, and mold release before applying the primer. Select sanding, etching, or degreasing for the actual substrate.
Remove residual solvent
Allow the specified air-dry periods. A 30-minute period at 70 deg C is identified for solvent evaporation from the primer film.
Control film thickness
Target 0.5-1.5 mil dry film and do not apply a dry film thinner than 0.5 mil.
