3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives Primer EW-5000

Main features

  • Water Based Epoxy Primer
  • Spray Surface Preparation Application
  • 0.18 to 0.28 MIL Thickness

Product Description

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Primer EW-5000 is a sprayable, water-based, heat-curing epoxy primer formulated to inhibit corrosion on prepared metal surfaces used in structural adhesive bonding systems. The primer air-dries to a handleable, tack-free condition before baking and can be applied by conventional spray equipment or brush.

Key features

  • Corrosion-inhibiting epoxy formulation: Provides a heat-cured primer layer intended to protect prepared metal surfaces against corrosive environments.
  • Handleable before baking: Air-dries at ambient temperature to a tack-free condition, eliminating the need for a separate pre-bake before handling.
  • Controlled thin-film application: Supports spray application to a target thickness of 0.20 to 0.25 mil (5 to 6 µm) within one box coat of two passes and may also be brush applied.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Corrosion-inhibiting priming of properly prepared metal surfaces
  • Metal-to-metal structural adhesive bonding systems
  • Metal-to-honeycomb structural adhesive assemblies

After-processing / final-state properties

Typical properties of the dried or heat-cured primer. Performance depends on primer thickness, surface preparation, cure cycle, adhesive system, and test configuration.

Property Value Unit Method / condition
Cured appearance Glossy to semi-glossy After cure
Air-dry tack None After ambient-temperature air drying
Optimal cured thickness 0.18 to 0.28 (4.5 to 7.0) mil (µm) After cure; normally achieved in 2 to 3 passes depending on temperature and humidity
Pencil hardness 7H ASTM D3363
Pencil hardness after Skydrol® exposure 7H ASTM D3363 after 7 days in Skydrol®
Salt-spray exposure Pass 40 days, ASTM B117, 1/16-inch-wide scribed lines; no corrosion beyond or inside the scribe under the reported test conditions
