Product Description

DOWSIL™ 700 Industrial Grade Silicone Sealant is a one-part, 100% silicone RTV adhesive-sealant with an acetoxy moisture-cure system and a non-slumping paste consistency. It is used for general industrial sealing, bonding, caulking, and moisture-exclusion applications on compatible metal, glass, silicone rubber, and plastic surfaces. The ready-to-use material cures at room temperature and forms a flexible rubber with a typical Shore A hardness of 20 and 577% elongation after seven days at 25°C and 50% relative humidity. The cured sealant remains flexible from -60 to 177°C in continuous service and may be used intermittently at temperatures up to 204°C. It is available in aluminum, clear, white, and black.

Key features

  • One-part acetoxy-cure silicone RTV: Supplied ready to use without component mixing and cures at room temperature through exposure to atmospheric moisture.
  • Broad service-temperature capability: Remains flexible from -60 to 177°C during continuous use and up to 204°C during intermittent exposure.
  • Non-slumping paste: Supports controlled application and tooling on industrial components, joints, trim, signs, doors, and windows.
  • Flexible cured properties: Provides a typical Shore A hardness of 20, tensile strength of 225 psi, and elongation of 577% after seven days of cure.
  • Weathering resistance: Suitable for industrial sealing applications where the cured sealant may encounter outdoor environmental exposure.
  • Food-contact and industrial listings: Complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 for incidental food contact, is listed to NSF/ANSI 51 for all food-contact types, and is recognized under UL QMFZ2.

Applications / Suitable for

  • General industrial sealing and adhesive applications
  • Bonding appliance parts, automotive trim, appliance trim, signs, and nameplates
  • Sealing compressors, gearboxes, pumps, doors, and windows
  • Caulking, moisture exclusion, and compatible food-processing equipment sealing

Application and curing

The sealant is supplied ready to use. Surface cleanliness, continuous application, prompt tooling, atmospheric moisture, and suitable substrate selection are important considerations when preparing the joint or bonded assembly.

Surface preparation: Clean and dry the surfaces and remove soap, oil, and other contaminants. Slight abrasion may improve adhesion.
Application: Apply in a continuous operation with the applicator held at approximately 45 degrees, pushing the sealant ahead of the nozzle.
Tooling window: Tool immediately after application and before a surface skin forms, typically within approximately five minutes.
Cure conditions: Typical tack-free time is 15 minutes and typical cure time for a 1/8-inch bead is 24 hours at 25°C and 50% relative humidity.

Storage and handling

Store at or below 32°C in the original unopened container. Atmospheric moisture is required for cure, so the sealant should not be used in totally confined areas. Consult the current safety data and container label before handling.

Technical guidance

Substrate and primer guidance

Compatible surface evaluation

The sealant adheres to clean metal, glass, silicone rubber, and plastic surfaces. Adhesion should be evaluated on the specific substrate, coating, cleaning process, and joint design.

Metals and general substrates

For stronger and more uniform bonds on metals and many other substrates, DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer or DOWSIL™ P5200 Adhesion Promoter may be considered.

Paints, plastics, and organic rubber

DOWSIL™ PR-1205 Prime Coat is recommended for paints, plastics, and organic rubber materials. Apply a thin film and allow it to dry for approximately one hour or until dry to the touch.

Applications

Industrial sealing and bonding applications

Industrial equipment housing, compressor, gearbox, and pump sealing application

Industrial equipment sealing

Applications include sealing compressors, gearboxes, and pumps. The non-slumping form supports bead placement, while the cured silicone remains flexible across a broad service-temperature range.

Appliance assembly showing bonded trim, nameplates, signs, and appliance components

Appliance and component assembly

The adhesive-sealant can be used to bond appliance parts, appliance and automotive trim, signs, and nameplates where adhesion to the specific cleaned substrate has been confirmed.

Food and beverage processing equipment joint sealed with silicone sealant

Food-processing equipment

The FDA and NSF provisions support evaluation for compatible sealing applications in food and beverage processing equipment. The final joint design, cleaning exposure, temperature, and regulatory use conditions require verification.

Selection guidance

Use limitations and compatibility considerations

DOWSIL™ 700 is an acetoxy-cure material that releases acetic acid during cure. Substrate compatibility, ventilation, moisture access, painting sequence, and service exposure should therefore be reviewed before selection.

  • Not recommended for underwater use or application to concrete or mortar.
  • Not recommended on oily woods such as cedar, teak, and cypress.
  • Do not apply where the sealant must subsequently be painted; paint before applying the silicone because paints do not adhere well to the cured sealant.
  • Do not use in totally confined areas because atmospheric moisture is required for cure.
  • Not recommended on PTFE-coated materials, polyethylene, or polypropylene.
  • Avoid use on or near copper, brass, zinc, galvanized iron, magnesium, and other acid-sensitive metals unless compatibility has been established, particularly under confined-cure conditions.
  • The product is not tested or represented as suitable for medical or pharmaceutical uses.
