Product Description

Araldite® CW 229 US Resin is a filled epoxy resin supplied as a beige viscous liquid for use in electrical insulation casting systems. The resin contains mechanically reinforcing fillers and is designed for processing into electrical insulation components used in indoor medium- and high-voltage applications, including SF6-insulated equipment when used as part of the designated curing system. The material is supplied in a high-viscosity liquid form suitable for conventional casting and Automatic Pressure Gelation (APG) processing methods. Araldite® CW 229 US Resin is intended for manufacturers requiring a filled epoxy resin for electrical insulation and encapsulation applications.

Heat-curing epoxy casting system for electrical insulation

ARALDITE CW 229 resin and ARADUR HW 229-1 hardener form a filled, heat-curing two-component epoxy casting system for electrically insulating components. The exact pair is documented for conventional casting and Automatic Pressure Gelation. The mixed viscosity is temperature-dependent, and the cure schedule is selected according to part mass, mold temperature, and processing method.

Processing

Select the cure profile for the casting size and process

Processing guidance differs for smaller parts, very large parts, and APG casting. The mixed material becomes substantially less viscous as temperature rises.

  1. Mix ARALDITE CW 229 resin and ARADUR HW 229-1 hardener at 100:100 by weight or 100:90 by volume.
  2. For smaller parts, preheat the mold to 80-100 deg C, mix at 40-80 deg C, then gel for 4-6 hours at 80 deg C or 2 hours at 100 deg C before the stated post-cure.
  3. For very large parts, use a step or ramp cure; one example ramps from 60-80 deg C to 140 deg C over 16-24 hours, followed by 4-6 hours at 140 deg C and slow cooling before demolding.
  4. For APG, preheat the mold to 140-160 deg C, fill in 2-5 minutes with mixed material at 50-60 deg C, and gel under 1-3 atm for 7-15 minutes before the stated post-cure.
  5. Typical mixed viscosity is 35,000-65,000 cP at 25 deg C, 2,500-3,500 cP at 50 deg C, and 700-1,200 cP at 70 deg C.

Storage and handling

Keep filled components dry and homogenized before processing

Store both components in dry, sealed original containers at 2-40 deg C. Under these conditions, shelf life is 1 year from date of manufacture.

The hardener is moisture-sensitive after opening. Reseal immediately and use nitrogen blanketing or desiccant venting when material will not be used rapidly.

Because the components are prefilled, carefully homogenize them with a low-shear mixer before processing and take precautions to avoid air entrapment.
