AEROWAX HT

Main features

  • 82 to 88 deg C Melting Range
  • Chemical-Resistant Selective-Plating Maskant
  • UV-Detectable BIOACT-Removable Coating

Product Description

AEROWAX™ HT Wax Maskant is a highly refined platers wax for selective plating operations. Supplied in slab form, it has a melting-point range of 82–88°C (180–190°F) and is used to mask both simple and complex part geometries during hard chrome, nickel sulfamate, and other selective plating processes. The wax combines adhesion and flexibility with resistance to crazing, cracking, elevated process temperatures, and harsh plating chemicals. It is detectable under UV light for inspection and can be removed using Petroferm BIOACT® 280 series dewaxing agents. One-tank and two-tank dip processes are documented, with a minimum of two wax coats recommended.

Processing

Masking process

Add AEROWAX™ HT to the tank reservoir and apply heat. Use clean, dry parts and apply a minimum of two wax coats. Build the coating through repeated dipping until the required mask thickness is reached.

Two-tank process — first coat: Heat the first tank to 118°C ± 9°C (245°F ± 15°F). Immerse the clean, dry part until it reaches the wax-bath temperature, then remove and cool slightly.
Two-tank process — subsequent coats: Heat the second tank to approximately 93°C (200°F). Dip and withdraw the part quickly, allow it to cool slightly, and repeat until the desired thickness is achieved.
One-tank process: Heat the tank to 110°C ± 5°C (230°F ± 10°F). Immerse the clean, dry part until it reaches bath temperature, remove and cool slightly, then repeat quick dip-and-withdraw cycles for subsequent coats.
Coating build: Apply at least two coats and continue until the wax mask reaches the thickness required for the specific part geometry and plating process.

Post-process

Wax removal

After plating, remove AEROWAX™ HT using Petroferm BIOACT® 280 series dewaxing agents. Establish the removal process for the part geometry, wax thickness, and applicable cleaning conditions, and follow the current cleaning-agent instructions and safety documentation.

Storage and packaging

AEROWAX™ HT is available in 60 lb (27 kg) cartons. Shelf life is 36 months when stored in the original sealed container above 10°C (50°F). Consult the current Safety Data Sheet for handling and disposal requirements.

Use contexts

Applications

AEROWAX™ HT is used as a removable mask during selective plating. Final process suitability depends on part cleanliness, geometry, wax thickness, bath conditions, plating chemistry, and dewaxing requirements.

Hard chrome plating
Masks selected surfaces of simple or complex parts during hard chrome plating operations.
Nickel sulfamate plating
Provides a removable wax barrier for selective nickel sulfamate plating processes.
Complex selective masking
Supports repeated dip coating of complex geometries where adhesion, flexibility, chemical resistance, and UV inspection are useful process characteristics.
